BW Youth Jobs Fair Survey Summary

The Botswana Youth Jobs Fair (BWYJF) organizers identified and timed the delivery of the fair at a time where job uncertainty is beyond critical and a national crisis.

As depicted from the results the overall ratings revealed that the fair performed well with a majority of respondents rating each of the different attributes between Very effective and Effective. The attributes that were rated are ; organization, the promotion, the workshops, the speakers and the fair aims.

 The BWYJF stemmed from a genuine desire to take an active stance against the lack of Youth Jobs in the Botswana market. The organizers took a practical, solution-orientated initiative in tackling youth unemployment and poverty eradication through an exhibition of employers, recruiters, service providers and institutions to meet with prospective employees, youth seeking jobs and entrepreneurship opportunities.

The total respondents of the BWYJF survey was 253 out of an estimate of total population of more than 1200. Our four data collectors conducted the survey using the Focussurveys mobile app. This summary represents only some of the high level analysis results.


Employment Status:

The top three statuses; 83% of respondents are unemployed, followed by the “other” employment status with 10% and lastly only 4% of the respondents are on permanent employment. The data revealed that the people who selected “other” employment status category are currently students or seeking higher education.

Education Level:

From the total respondents only 1% opted not to share information on their educational background. Of the 99% of the respondents, the data analysis revealed the top three levels of study are, bachelors, followed by advanced diploma and lastly an honours degree with 50%, 16% and 12% respectively.

Career Expectations:

The results of the study revealed that 66% of the respondents seek to get a job (get employed) followed by 23% to become employers (job creators), 7% of the respondents seek to further their studies and the last 4% have other expectations.

For those whom seek to get employed

After a text analysis we revealed the most preferred employment types; Accountants with 25%, IT specialist with 22%, Engineering with 15%, Marketing with 10% and 9%, 8%, 6% and 5% for health sector, human resource, management and economist/financial analyst respectively.
